The origin and approval of ideas for the correction and re-education of prisoners in Russia in the late XVIII – first half of the XIX century
The article discusses the process of origin and formation of ideas for correcting and
re-educating the personality of prisoners, which falls in Russia at the end of the 18th – first
half of the 19th centuries. The concrete historical material shows the reasons that not only
brought these ideas to life, but also influenced their evolutionary development.
The complex and ambiguous experience of the implementation of humanistic principles
in the legislative and penal domestic practice is analyzed in many respects. The idea of a
humane attitude to the personality of the convicted person was largely promoted by public
organizations, in particular the Society of Prison Guardians.
It is shown that at the end of the period under review, humanistic ideas about the value of
the human person and the need for the rule of law firmly entered the russian philosophical
and political culture and led to a change in the vector of the penal policy.
