About the journal
Founder and publisher – Federal State-Financed Educational Institution of Higher Education “Vologda Institute of Law and Economics of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia” (VIPE FSIN Russia).
The research and practice journal Penitentiary Science was founded in 2007. Prior to August 2019 the journal was published under the title Institute Bulletin: Crime, Punishment, Correction. Publication frequency since 2011 – four times a year (once every three months).
The print version of the journal is registered with the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Registration Certificate PI No. FS77-76598 dated August 15, 2019) and with the ISSN International Center (No. 2686-9764).
According to the Decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the journalPenitentiary Science is on the List of peer-reviewed academic journals and editions that are authorized to publish principal research findings of doctor of sciences and candidate of sciences dissertations in the following scientific specialties:5.1.1 Theoretical and historical sciences (legal sciences); 5.1.2 Public law (state law) sciences (legal sciences); 5.1.4 Criminal law sciences(legal sciences);5.3.9 Legal psychology and psychological security(psychological sciences); 5.8.1 General pedagogy, history of pedagogy and education(pedagogical sciences). In the current List of the Higher Attestation Commission, the journal is classified as K2.
According to the Recommendation of the Presidium of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation No. 32/1-NS of December 10, 2021 “On the conjugation of scientific specialties of the nomenclature approved by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation No. 118 of February 24, 2021, scientific specialties of the nomenclature approved by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation No. 1027 of October 23, 2017” scientific specialties of the nomenclature approved by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation No. 118 of February 24, 2021 correspond to the scientific specialties provided for by the previously valid nomenclature of scientific specialties.

The journal enables discussions on the topical issues of penitentiary science and practice, taking into account their legal, psychological and pedagogical aspects. The journal publishes original articles and reviews by authors and teams of authors from Russia and other countries, in Russian and English. The journal’s editor provides an opportunity for young scientists to publish research materials of their dissertations. The journal aims to provide the wider scientific community with information on the current state and development of penal science and establish a platform for discussions on the state of the penal system in the Russian Federation and in the world.
The Editorial Board of the journal Penitentiary Science includes 10 authoritative scholars from Russia and other countries; all the members of the Editorial Board are doctors of sciences; the Editorial Council consists of 22 scholars, including 19 doctors of sciences and 3 candidates of sciences.
